The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, made an announcement this week that his country is going to participate with the United States in a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The next Olympic competition is going to be held in Beijing, China. There is growing criticism regarding the human rights abuses in the Communist nation.
The Canadian Prime Minister made his decision after President Joe Biden decided the same thing. It wasn’t long before leaders in Australia and the United Kingdom followed suit.
Both U.S. and Canadian athletes will continue to train to compete in the Olympic Games. The announcement from both countries was that their government administrations would not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games.
According to Jen Psaki, this decision was made by the U.S. because of the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity.
“The athletes on Team USA have our full support, we’ll be behind them 100% as we cheer them on from home. We will not be contributing to the fanfare of the Games,” Psaki added.
Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister reported that Australia would join the U.S. in declaring a diplomatic boycott of the games. He went further saying that the Australian government would be “happy” to talk to the Chinese government about the issues in focus, but the Chinese government has consistently not been willing to meet and talk about the important issues.
Morrison said that it should not come as a surprise that the Australian government official would not be going to China for the games. But he said that Australia is a great sporting nation and that they would be separating the issues of sport and the political issues that are between two governments.
It was reported in the BBC this week that Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of England, said that the United Kingdom will diplomatically boycott the Winter Games. This decision from the Prime Minister came on the heels of the former conservative leader, Iain Duncan Smith calling for a diplomatic boycott.
This is not the position of all the politicians in America. The Republican senator from Arkansas, Tom Cotton, lashed out at President Biden on Tuesday saying that the president has “no plan” to protect American athletes sent to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Cotton made these statements while doing an interview with “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News.
Cotton said, “This is really nothing more than the sleeves off Joe Biden’s vest. It’s the status quo. China was going to have very strict travel controls anyway on diplomats and corporate officials because of their Draconian coronavirus lockdowns.”
He also talked about his concern over the safety of the athletes. Cotton said that he sent a letter to the Biden administration asking for an assurance of safety for the athletes. He doesn’t believe they have a plan.
China has dismissed the decision by Canada and the United Kingdom to join the United States’ diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games as a “farce.”
The communist country is also not concerned that the decisions of these countries will cause a chain reaction with other countries. China has reported that numerous heads of state, government leaders, and members of royal families have registered to attend.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters that China had not extended invitations to the U.S., Canada, or the U.K. and that it did not matter if their officials come or not. He said they all will see the success of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
